Environmental sustainability

Over the past few days we have been discussing environmental sustainability. You kept track of your garbage for 12 hours. Over the weekend I would like you to continue to keep this record; by Sunday night post the number of items you disposed of over the 4 days.

Does it surprise you? Were there items potentially recyclable? How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash? Choose one item you throw out often and find a way someone has reused it. Describe what they have done.

The things I disposed of over 4 Days:
    1. 4 tissue papers
    2. 2 sprite cans
    3. 1 Polystyrene box
    4. 1 Plastic fork
    5. 2 plastic drink bottles
    6. 1 Plastic bag
    What surprised you?
Yes, the amounts of stuff I threw really surprised me because many of the things like the sprite cans, polystyrene box and the plastic fork and the plastic bag were with the things I got for the shop outside the school gate. When ever I go there I see about 20 people at once stuck in that small shop. After seeing my garbage I new that if the other students, teachers or other people went in there they would come out with the same amount of garbage as me. I can imagine my garbage multiplied by about 100 others.

    Were the items potentially recyclable?
Yes, All of them could have been recycled as I have heard or seen of many ideas of people recycling some of the materials in my garbage.
How can you change the amount of items you in the trash?
Maybe when I got to the outside school shop from tomorrow I can tell them that I do not need a plastic bag for the things I bought.
Many times when I go outside school I do not feel hungry but I still buy things I like sprite which I love drinking. From tomorrow I can try to only go outside school if I am hungry.
    What do I throw often?
    I often throw plastic bags.
what have people done to reuse plastic bags?
This person has taken different plastic bags with different designs to make a colourful piece of art.

    1.Does it surprise you?
Yes, because a lot of the food products that you pick up from the supermarket shelves are in plastic containers. Sometimes they still have the smell of the food or the containers are just too small or too big to use for putting leftover food or for anything else.

    2.Were there items potentially recyclable?
The plastic spoon could be used in the kitchen or if we are going on a trip it could be reused at that time, and then discarded.
But the cornflakes bowls are just too small or too big to be used for putting leftover food or for anything else and it doesn’t have a lid either.

3.How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?
What I can do to reduce the amount of trash is, to buy the big cornflakes box, rather that using the individual bowls. This will also eliminate the plastic spoon problem.

4.Choose one item you throw out often and find a way someone has reused it. Describe what they have done.

I have thrown out at least 4 plastic bowls in the past 4 days, Instead of throwing them away I can use it for a stationary holder or put some soil and seeds a make it a flower pot. That would help clean the air around us too.

oYou kept track of your garbage for 12 hours.

oThe number of items you disposed of over the 4 days.

    Thursday- I threw away:
o A piece of scrap paper

Things I disposed of over 4 Days:
    1. 2 coke cans
    2. 25 tissue paper
    3. 14 cotton
    4. 2 plastic water bottle
    5. Pack of chip
    6. Cardboard box
    7. 2 Corn Flake Box
    8. Milk bottle
    9. 2 candy wrapper
    10. 3 plastic bags
    11. Used Paper
    12. 2 cheese stick
    13. Dog food can
    14. News Paper
    15. Leftover food

    Does it surprise you?
Yes I can of does surprise me because it’ quite a lot of things I threw away that could be recycle and it gets me wondering that where does all my waste go to will they use it for other things such as those coke can which are made into tuk tuk or are they going to bury or burn it. And if I think of it, it would be a lot of trash each person throws away and imagine if the whole world throws at least 15 things in 4 day it would be a huge amount of garbage.
    Were there items potentially recyclable?
Some of the items were recyclable such as coke cans and the cardboard box it could have been used to make a vase or to put gardening tools in. And I have seen some of these materials being used in other ways.
How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?
I can change it by using a different material which can be reusable such as using a napkin or a handkerchief instead using a tissue paper.
    What do I throw often?
    I often throw bottles.
What have people done to reuse bottles?
I have seen people used bottles stack up to make a table and into a purse-> A purse bottle link

The things I disposed were 3 scrap paper, 2 straws, 2 straw wraps, 1 can bottle, 2 juice bottles and some tissue papers.

Yes, because I throw away lots of things which can be recycled or reused. For example, straws, straw wraps, cans, bottles and tissue papers. I also throw away lot of things. All of these rubbishes go to developing countries such as china, slums and also Phillipines. If we add all the rubbishes together in the class, the slum areas will have a mountain full of rubbishes already.

Nearly all of the items that I disposed were recyclable. I could have made something with the can bottles. I can reuse the straws for drinking. However, I don't think I can reuse th e juice bottles.

I can change the amount of items I put in the trash by recycling and reusing some of the items I throw away. I can make something with them or sometimes use them again. It's just that I am too lazy to do these stuffs:) I can also tell the shop people that I don't need plastic bag just for one juice bottle.

I throw a lot of juice bottles away. Many people make creative art works by bottles. Long time ago, I went to Siam paragon and saw an art Exhibition with art exhibits representing recycled materials. It was really cool. One person made a christmas tree with coke cans.

The things I threw over the past 4 days:
4 cans (put away for recycling)
5 plastic wraps (some recyclable, some not)
    2 kitchen tissues
    3/4 eaten hamburger
    eaten apple

    Did this suprise you?
No, it did not surprise me that much because I don't feel that it was that much.

    Were there items potentially recyclable?
Yes, aluminum cans which actually gets recycled by staff in our apartment. The food and paper could have been put in a compost but there is none around where we live and since we live in an apartment we don't have our own compost.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?
Since we already recycle some things, the one thing that we could do is buy a soda stream to make our own soda water so we wouldn't have to buy the cans.

I throw out plastic wrap the most. The way someone has recycled plastic is by cutting the plastic in to five centimeter wide strips and knitting the strips into a bag for your grocery shopping needs. It is a very strong and long lasting recycled item.

I have thrown 8 items in the trash from Thursday to Sunday, they are:
    1.Chocolate and Candy wrappers
    2.Packet of chips
    3.Tissue paper
    4.Cans
    5.Plastic bottles of milk
    6.Both side used paper
    7.Plastic Bag
    8.Left over food

    Did this surprise you?
It surprises me abit because it is only 8 items in 4 days so that is 2 item per day but the leftover food people that can't afford food can have that food and also the plastic bottle of milk and cans, many people in the world can use the plastic milk bottle maybe to use it as there water bottle and also the top of a cans can go to an hospital so they can use it.

    Were there items recyclable?
Many of the items I threw away are recyclable like the cans, plastic bottle, plastic bags and other items. We could use plastic bags to keep many different type of things inside.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?
I can reduce my items to only 4 items because I can keep the cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags and the leftover pizza and other foods in put it in the fridge.

    1.ice-cream wrapping (3)
    2.bottles (10)
    3.food (9 meals)
    4.tissue paper
    5.note paper
    6.tooth paste
    7.tennis grip

This did not really surprise me because it is what i normally do every day and when i use them i don't waste it so it is wisely used. The only thing that surprised me was the 10 bottles i drank.

As i said i used all the items until they were kind-of unusable but some could be recycled like the plastic bottles because you could use it to make other interesting thing like rocket hich we did in Tech class.

To reduce the amount i could play less amount of hours of tennis. By doing that i would not have to drink too much and i wouldn't be very hungry!!!!!

During the past few days I threw away:
    1. 5 tissue papers
    2. 3 egg shells
    3. 1 Plastic food container
    4. 3 energy bar wrappers
    5. 2 candy wrappers
    6. 2 plastic cup
    7. 1 paper cup
    8. 1 lead box

    Does it surprise you?
Yes it does surprise me. This is because I threw away many things during the past few days and it makes me feel guilty throwing away things which can be reused and things which could be recycled. I think that I should start thinking of ways I can recycle it for example; inventing it to something new which could be used in my daily life.

    Were the items potentially recyclable?
Yes, some of the items I threw away like the plastic and paper cup could be reused or recycled. I could use it as a pencil holder or turn it into something useful I could use. The plastic cup could also be used for planting small plants and grow it in our garden when its too big for the cup.

How can you change the amount of things you throw away?
I could maybe could bring my own water bottle to school so I don't need to use the paper cups and could also take it to other places with me so I don't have to buy plastic bottles. I could also keep my own handkerchief so I don't waste lots of tissue paper. I could also not buy food in plastic containers and instead eat at home.

The item that I threw away the most which could be recycled was the plastic cup. With a plastic cup i could plant small trees in them or decorate the outside to make it look nice and use it as a pencil holder. We can also make use it for watering plants by cutting holes underneath the cup.

    1. Lots of tissue paper
    2. 4 plastic bottles
    3. plastic spoon
    4. cardboard box (pocky)
    5. Plastic bag
    6. Plastic cookie packet
    7. Polystyrene box (food)
    8. A Pepsi Can
    9. Mcdonalds fried chicken box
    10. Mcdonalds chips pack

    Did it surprise me?
Yes it did surprise me, I didn't think I could throw away so many things in 3 days, I couldn't even count the number of tissues I used. Most of what I threw away is probably recyclable, and if I threw away that many things I can't imagine what some others throw away on a daily basis.

    Can the items be recycled?
Yes most of them can definitely be recycled. If you look at my list I threw away about 4 plastic bottles, I was at a soccer tournament at the time, at the end of the tournament I saw a huge bin, probably bigger than me (not taller) filled with plastic bottles and another 3 rubbish bags also filled with plastic bottles. I don't know where they went but I know those could definitely be recycled into something useful.

I think I don't need to buy so many things from across the street, I always buy a snack but I don't really need to, I usually have another snack when i get home. I could go and buy a re-usable water bottle, so when i go for soccer or anything other sport I don't have to buy so many plastic bottles.

I think people make sculptures out of cans and other metals, plastic is crushed so it takes up less space.

What I threw out in the garbage:
    Tissues
    Bag of Oreos
    Dried glue stick
    Double Sided Recycled Paper
    Plastic Wrappers
    Water Bottle
    Packet Milk
    Broken Pencil
    Coke Can
    Empty Soda Bottle
    Plastic Bags

    Does it surprise me?
Yes it does because I never knew what I threw out but now it's like too much. Nearly half of the things I throw out can be recycled. It makes me feel extremely bad about all the waste that will go to certain places.

    Were the items potentially recyclable?
Yes, things like bottles and stuff could be reused, also all the paper i used went to extreme waste. I could've used the plastic bags to more use.

How can you change the amount of things you throw away?
I could maybe reuse those water bottles and use them to store drinking water. I could reuse the plastic bags to go shopping in the supermarket. I also could use all the paper before I throw it out or maybe give to to the people who are making reusable paper bags so it goes to a good cause.

The item that I threw away the most that could be recycled was the plastic bags. I could go shopping with those bags at the supermarket and other places so they don't have to give me another and another one so that I end with like 10 of them.

    9 Plastic water bootle

    Does it superise me?
Yes, becauase I never new I threw out this much in only a few days.

    Were the items potentially recyclable?
Yes, I could have reused the water bootle, used a cloth bag instead of a plastic bag and I could have made com, post out of my banana peal.

How can you change the amount of things you throw away?
I can change the amount of things being thrown by recycling them

  12. Over the last 4 days I threw away:
    1. About 15 plastic bottles (water)
    2. 2-3 medicine containers
    3. Food rests (Soup/ corn flakes/ noodle rests)

    Did it surprise you?

It did surprise me because I thought that I would throw away more than just 3 different things.

    Were the items potentially recyclable?

Yes, the water bottles could be reused, by melting it down. The food is not recyclable, but at that moment someone could have eaten it (despite the fact that it could be contaminated as I am sick). The medicine containers could maybe also be recycled, but I´m not sure.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?

I could for example finish the food.

Choose one item you throw out often and find a way someone has reused it. Describe what they have done.

A plastic bottle can be used as a water gun. Just make a hole in the cap and fill it with water. Then you can have a water fight,

    2 candy wrappers
    4 cardboard cups
    1 plastic bag
    1 popcorn box
    2 tissue papers
    1 piece of paper
    1 plastic bag

    Does it surprise you?
Quite a bit because I threw out a lot of garbage in only a few days. It surprises me to think about how much garbage my family and several other families would throw out.

    Were there items potentially recyclable?

Yes, I could have reused the coke zero bottle again for water. I could have used the other side of the paper. And I could have reused the plastic bag. The rest of my garbage could have also been melted down or somehow recycled and reused.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?

I can think more about how I could reuse the item that I am throwing away.I can also do simple things such as ask for no plastic bag when I am buying something.

Choose one item you throw out often and find a way someone has reused it. Describe what they have done.

I once went somewhere were the people made a Christmas tree out of plastic bags and it looked really creative!

    6. 4 banana peels
    7. 1 Gatorade bottle
    8. 2 yalkult bottles
    9. 1 Ice cream box

    Does it surprise you?
What surprised me was that I threw lots of things that could be reused, recycled or it could decompose. If everybody from the 6 billion people throws these things every 4 days there will be around 96 billion items thrown every 4 days.

    Were there items potentially recyclable?
Some items like the pizza boxes, the bottles, can and the banana peels could be recycled. I saw many people on the streets that make tooktooks out of normal soda cans. Banana peels could be decomposed into the ground to make food for plants.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?
To reduce the amount of items I put in the trash I can see if the item is recyclable or not if it is than I will recycle it if it isn’t I will throw it away. I could also cut down on the unnecessary items I buy like coke cans and drink bottles.

An Item that somebody else has recycled was the pizza boxes. I found 2 ways that people recycled pizza boxes and one prototype of a pizza box that should be made to save the environment.

Recycling way 1: somebody cut up the card board from the pizza box and glued it together in such a way that it no can be used as a laptop stand.

Recycling way 2: Many people make solar ovens out of pizza boxes. These reach to about 275°F. The way to make a solar oven is:
    1. Cut out a 3 sides of a square about a 3 cm from the border in the lid
    2. Fold the panel up
    3. Put aluminum foil in the inside of the panel
    4. In the whole in the lid add some clear plastic, thick plastic works the best like laminate.
    5. Inside the box put some black paper so it can absorb heat
From more information on how to build a Solar Oven go to http://www.solarnow.org/pizzabx.htm

Prototype for future Pizza box: this box has 4 plates included and you can close the box without wasting space when you eat only half. Since it is a Video it is better explained when you see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfQGP5-QHpw

Things I threw away in 4 days are:
    1. 7 tissue papers
    2. One Ginger ail can
    3. Bottle of lemonade
    4. One tissue box
    5. One empty bag of chips
    6. One pizza box
    7. 2 Egg shells
    8. small plastic bag that had flour in it

    Does it surprise you?

It surprises me that most things I threw out were recyclable and that they didnt have to be thrown away. What also surprised me was that it seems that all the trash thrown away were all connected in someway. For example, the eggs and the flour were both used for making cookies and the juice, chips and pizza was because I had a friend over and that is what we ate for dinner.

    Were there items potentially recyclable?

I'm sure the tissues werent recyclable and also the small plastic bag that had flour in it since it wasnt that big and I dont think the izza box is recyclable because the tomato sauce stained on the box but everything else was probably recyclable if we tried. Even the egg shells were probably recyclable if it wasnt into pieces because you can paint it for easter or something.

How can you change the amount of items you put in the trash?

I think I can decrease the amount of trash going into the trash can by thinking about what can be reused or recycled and asking my family members if they like to use it especially my little sister because she likes collecting empty aluminum boxes, tissue boxes and other random trash we throw out every day to use it as containers or small houses for her dolls.

Choose one item you throw out often and find a way someone has reused it.

One time when I was still living in America, I was at my neighbour's garage sale and it was a little different then other garage sales because instedad of only selling old things they dont need, they also sold things they made out recyclable things and I didnt buy them but one thing I found interesting is how they cut off the tops of plastic bottles and cans then painted and decorated them to make pen stands or phone holders.
