In this unit we are looking at development. One key aspect of this is that we can measure development in different ways.
Your Task: Look at least one video from each of the four different countries on Magnum Photos.
Below post your response for two homes you found most interesting by answering the following questions:
1. Which country?
2. Who is speaking?
3. Where do they live?
4. What did you find interesting about their life?
5. If you could ask them one question what would it be?

ReplyDeleteThe country I was looking at was Venezuela in a town called Caracas. The population of this place has more than quadrupled in the last 50 years. If the town has no sewage system then stuff from toilets etc well end up in the streets. This is most dangerous Country in the World that is not at war.
Mrs. Torrealba was speaking and she talked about her early life and how she got married and had kids. She also described the inside of her house which is a 1 room, 1 bed and a kitchen and she practically called her neighborhood a slum. She said it was a very dangerous place to live in especially when theres slums and gangsters around the neighborhood. She also mentioned that her family was unable to leave the house because their afriad of getting robbed or killed. Now she intends to protect her children and lead them to a better path because all that the next generations could get from this place is how to be a criminal and commit crimes.
What's interesting about their lives is that they are able to walk down to the river shanty and play which I never could get a chance to do. But now they couldn't because of how dangerous this town is.
If I could ask them one question I would ask: If they were granted 1 wish what would they ask for?

ReplyDeleteTorrealba Family in Venesuela:
-They live in Caracas
-I think the fact that even just one step outside of their house is danger, they tend to survive is very interesting.
-If I can ask the people one question it will be how can you survive for so many years when if you step outside your house there is a chance of you being murdered orrobbed.

-They live in Kibera
-I think the fact that they only have one bed but have 10 people but still say that they are comfterble living there is interesting.

ReplyDeleteThese people live in Venezuela. The mother of the Torrealba Household talks about how dangerous it is to live there. the family lives in a small house in Caracas. I thought that it was interesting that they can’t even go outside because they might get shot. If I could ask them a question I would ask: "Have you seen someone get killed? If yes, what did you do?"
This family lives in Kenya. The father of the Arori family was talking about how they live. They live in a very small house that has only one room and one bed. I thought that it was interesting that, although they were very poor, they had a TV and were happy. If I could ask him one question I would ask:"Would you rather live alone and have the hole space for you, but never be able to talk to someone or rather keep living like this and having to share one bed or sleep on a chair?"

ReplyDeleteAnother Country I was looking at was East Africa's Kibera. It's one of the largest slums and one quarter of Nairobi's population. About 700,000 people squeeze into a piece of land. There are no pave roads, people use the active railway tracks as there main pedestrain. They have no social structure whatsoever.
Mr. Atori was speaking and he was saying that 10 people was living in this one room house. They are squeezed into beds, chairs and tables to sleep. But they are pretty satisfied about their life and unlike other households. He is only afriad of getting diseases and suffocating with so much people in a small room.
One interesting thing about them is that they are satisfied with life. They only earn 1$ but they put it to good use.
If I could ask them one thing I would ask: What do they regret doing anything in life?
Anish Says,
ReplyDeleteSilva Family in Caracas, Venezuela.
Mr. and Ms. Silva built the house. It was once a deserted room but they built it into a comfortable house for 5 members of their family.
The interesting thing about Mr. Silva's life was that dispite the fact that he is struggling to keep his family happy he had
lots of beautiful artifacts all over his house.
The question that I would ask is:
If you could change one thing in your life what would it be?
The Arori family in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. They live in a small house. They have one bed but 10 people under Mr. Arori's shelter.
The interesting thing about Mr. Arori's life was that even though in his family it is hard to get a good night sleep in a soft bed he still calls his life comfortable.
The question that I would ask is:
What do you do to feed the people under your shelter?
Dennis says :-) : i was watching people in venezuela, caracas. the torrealla famliy had many problems in the city with the violence and crime the adults used to be able to walk along the streets but now the children are not even able to stand outside on some steps anymore because you may get mugged raped or other types of things

What i found intresting was the crime amount of crime happening in the city. I think this is because of the amount of poverty around them. What i found really interesting was the amount of crime going on near them. With so many kids it must be extremely hard to take care of their children, the kids always stay in the house to avoid influence of gangsters, it must be boring for them.
If i could ask them 1 question it would be :
How do you get around town to get food if they're so many gangsters and crime?

ReplyDeleteThe first country I chose was Venezuela in the city of Caracas.
In this clip Mrs. Torealba was speaking and she explained about her life and how dangerous the place she lived was. She cared for her child very much and she wouldn't allow them to go outside because people get robbed and Murdered everyday.
What I found interesting was that this place is a very dangerous place and the kids learn bad things from the gangs. The other thing which also interested me was that people get robbed and murdered and nobody outside who knew about this situation did nothing to stop this from happening.
If I could ask her one thing I would ask her what she thinks about the life she is living and if she had one wish what would that wish be.
The second country I chose was Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya.
The person speaking is the oldest daughter of this family. She was talking about her life and and her family. She talked about her daily routine.
The thing I found interesting was that she chose to live here because it was cheap and that if you were cought stealing you would get killed.
The question I would like to ask is that if she had the opportunity to go to school, would she go?

Mr. Singh lives in Dharavi, Mumbai, India, he lives in a small house in the zopadpattis (slums).
Mr. Singh is very attached to his house in the slums because he came here soon after he was born, his school life and college life took place while he was in Dharavi. he said that he doesn't want Dharavi to develop because every thing he owns will be run over by bulldozers. He works in a insurance company and gets more than enough money to support his family. He wants to be a businessman buy a house and a car.
What I found interesting was that he loved a slum more than i expected people who live in poverty to. I liked the way he had a positive attitude about the slums and his lifestyle. If I got ask him one question it would be "how are you going to start your own business?"

Mr. Imin lives in Jakarta, Indonesia under a bridge. His house is made out of planks of wood and nails. His house is about 10 feet long and 3 feet high.
Mr. Imin has polio and while he was a child his mother didn't have enough money to pay for the medicines so he had to except polio as his fate and as a challenge in life. Every morning he goes to go to the river to collect plastic, then he goes to beg for money with his sister. sometimes police and security guards chase him away but he hides till they go away and then continues with his job. He has 2 children, they live in the village because its too dangerous for them under the bridge.
What i found interesting was how he manages to do so much even though he has polio. If i got to ask him one question it would be " How do you manage to escape the police and security guards when you have polio?
